Paint Correction: Removing Paint Defects the Right Way
Understanding Paint Correction
Paint correction is a meticulous process of restoring a vehicle's paintwork by eliminating surface defects like swirl marks, scratches, oxidation, and water spots. At Doctor Shine Detailing in West and North Vancouver, we specialize in delivering flawless finishes, ensuring your car looks as pristine as the day it left the showroom.
Common Paint Defects
Swirl Marks: Fine scratches caused by improper washing/drying techniques.
Scratches: Deeper imperfections caused by abrasions.
Oxidation: Faded or dull paint caused by prolonged exposure to UV rays.
Water Spots: Mineral deposits left behind after water evaporates.
Understanding these defects is the first step in achieving a professional-level finish.
The Paint Correction Process
1. Comprehensive Inspection
Before starting the correction process, we thoroughly inspect the vehicle's paint under various lighting conditions. This helps us identify defects and assess the paint’s overall condition.
2. Washing and Decontamination
Proper preparation ensures the correction process is effective:
Pre-wash: Using pre-soak to remove dirt and grime without causing more swirls.
Hand wash: Begin hand washing the vehicle with a pH-neutral soap.
Iron Removal: Removing embedded iron particles and chemical contaminants with a dedicated iron remover.
Clay Bar Treatment: Removing bonded contaminants from the paint’s surface.
3. Paint Thickness Measurement
Using specialized tools, we measure the paint’s thickness to ensure a safe correction process without compromising the integrity of the clear coat. First, measure the paint in the door jam to have an untampered measurement, if the paint is less than 3 mils, or 80 microns, it’s advised to not polish unless you’re a professional. Otherwise, you could go through the clear coat and cause irreversible damage.
4. Masking Sensitive Areas
To protect trim, rubber seals, and emblems, we use masking tape to ensure no accidental damage occurs during the polishing process.
5. Cutting and Polishing
This is the heart of paint correction, involving:
Cutting Stage: Removing deeper defects using aggressive compounds and pads.
Polishing Stage: Refining the finish with less abrasive products.
Finishing Stage: Achieving a high-gloss shine with ultra-fine polishes.
6. Final Inspection and Touch-Ups
Once polishing is complete, we inspect the paintwork under high-intensity lighting to ensure all defects have been addressed. Any missed spots are corrected at this stage. Please note: If you have any paint chips or deep scratches that require touch-up paint, we can address these concerns, but it will need to be done before paint-correcting the rest of the car as it involves a wet sanding stage.
